The Story Behind Design Dot: Lara Jarmakani’s Vision for Timeless, Experience-Driven Design

There is a difference between a beautiful space and a meaningful one. I realised this when I struggled to find interiors in Lagos that felt truly intentional and emotionally connected.

International designers often had strong aesthetic instincts but lacked the local understanding needed to execute projects in Nigeria, from achieving quality finishes to navigating tight timelines.

Local offerings, on the other hand, rarely translated a client’s personality into spaces that were both sophisticated and contextually grounded. Too many spaces were designed to impress instead of being designed to be experienced. What was missing was not bigger budgets or more expensive materials, but intentional design.

The ability to combine creativity with practical execution while considering how a space flows, functions, feels, and quietly communicates the identity of those who inhabit it.

That realisation became the foundation of Design Dot. The journey began with a sketchpad, a small team, and ambitious ideas. The vision, however, was always larger than the projects themselves. I wanted to build a studio that transformed personality and purpose into environments rooted in thoughtful design and local understanding.

This approach demands more discipline than many people realise. It requires listening deeply and having the restraint to reject beautiful elements that simply do not belong to a space.

True luxury is not merely visual; it is emotional and experiential. It is the feeling a space leaves with you long after you have walked away. As Design Dot has grown, so has Nigeria’s design industry. Interior Architecture is increasingly recognised not as an indulgence but as an essential part of lifestyle, wellbeing, and brand identity.

More people are embracing thoughtful spaces, making quality design more accessible than ever. Technology has accelerated this transformation; virtual walkthroughs, material simulations, and AI help explore ideas and work more efficiently. Yet technology cannot replace the one element that matters most, intention.

The greatest challenge in building Design Dot was never design itself. It was balancing creativity with logistics, operations, and business management while carrying the weight of clients’ trust.

Whenever the demands became overwhelming, I returned to our purpose. We are not simply creating beautiful spaces. We are creating impact, and surrounding myself with a team that shares that vision has made all the difference. Trends will change, and comparisons will always exist, but longevity comes from authenticity.

My vision has always been to redefine what luxury interior architecture can look and feel like across Nigeria and Africa, not by replicating global trends, but by creating a design language rooted in our identity, craftsmanship, materials, and cultural perspective.

Design should not simply impress people; it should move them.
